Getting information from users can be a headache at the best of times. Sometimes I run across organisations that have no IT department, and obtaining Exchange and Service Pack versions from a user can be a nightmare! Even some IT staff wouldn't have a clue as to what version of Exchange they are running, let alone what Service Pack.

 

Well, besides going to the console, Microsoft have given us an easy way of determining this remotely. Telnet to the Exchange Server on Port 25, and match the corresponding message to the ones below to find out the Service Pack version. This information can also be found by the MSExchangeIMC informational event 1000 in the Event Log.
